For many years there was a need for a hypoallergenic dog with the right personality to work as a guide dog. Finally, in the 1980s Wally Conran, director of the puppy program at the Royal Institute for the Blind, developed a cross between a Labrador and a standard Poodle with its allergy-free coat. The result is the Labradoodle, and it has become one of the most popular breeds. It is said to have the best traits of both breeds; the gentle and trainable nature of the Labrador with the hypoallergenic non-shedding coat of the Poodle.
Labradoodles are well-natured, easily trained, and very family-oriented pets. They are excellent with children with their easygoing personality. They may be a bit reserved when first introduced to a person, but will rapidly become comfortable and create a new friend. They are smart and inquisitive which can get them in trouble and they are prone to chewing, so leave lots of chew toys around particularly if you have to leave them alone in the home.
A good choice for guide dog training, Labradoodles learn quickly and are easily trained for simple and complex tasks. They will form lifelong bonds with their owners and friends and will be a great asset for those needing guide dog assistance. They do require some moderate exercise for their health but are very comfortable being indoors with a family.
